We all make history every day!
What I did yesterday… it’s ancient history.
Every word I said, every action I took – in the end, I wrote my story.
The book of human history can be changed and rewritten. It is the survivors, the winners, who tell the stories, and their views may or may not be correct. Only a truly accurate historical account matters, and it is kept by the heavenly scribes. 2 Corinthians 5:9-10 – So, whether at home or away, we have the ambition to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may be rewarded for his deeds while in the flesh, according to the good or the bad he has done.
Romans 14:10-12 – Why do you judge your brother? Or you, why are you looking at your brother with disdain? For we will all stand before God’s court. For it is written, “As long as I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow before me, and every tongue shall glorify God.” Then each of us will give an account of our work to God.
Matthew 12:36-37 – But I tell you, every word that is unintentionally spoken will be revealed on the day of judgment. For by your word you will be justified, and by your word you will be condemned.
The scriptures clearly teach that unbelievers and believers will come face to face with God when He opens the history books. To the believers, with gratitude we will not answer for our sins, for all our transgressions have been “aborted” by the blood of Christ. Our history of sin is removed from our story by the power of Christ’s perfect sacrifice on the cross. However, we will recount what we have done in our lives since God saved us, for the sake of getting a reward or losing a reward.
1 Corinthians 3:10-15 – By the grace of God given to me, I have laid a foundation like a wise builder, and others have built on it. But every man must be careful how he builds it. For no other foundation can be laid but the one that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now, if anyone builds on a foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, and straw, everyone’s work will be obvious; for the day will show it, for it must be revealed by fire, and fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. If a man’s work on which he built remains, he will receive a reward. If someone’s work is burned, he will suffer a loss; but he himself will be saved, but as if by fire.
Unbelievers – those who have rejected Christ’s offer of payment for sins – will stand before God to scrutinize history.
Revelation 20:11-15 – Then I saw a great white throne, and the One who sat on the throne, with heaven and earth in front of him, disappeared, and there was no place for them to be found. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, the book of life; and the dead are judged according to what is written in the book, according to their deeds. The sea gives back the dead they have in their possession, and death and the underworld also the dead they have in their possession; and they were judged, each of them according to his deeds. After that, the god of death and the underworld were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name is not written in the book of life, he will be thrown into the lake of fire. Today, I am making history. You too.
While we can’t choose every detail of our story, we do have a say in how history remembers us. God has given us life, breath, and the right to decide what is written in heaven.
What will the story reveal about you? Only time will tell.
Two takeaway meals.
First, although we cannot go back and change what we have done or said, we can ask God to rewrite history through the power of Jesus’ blood. He is a gracious and loving God, and He is waiting above to show us compassion. He wants and can change the course of our history. Second, we must all think carefully about our daily actions, knowing that our history is recorded in heaven for all eternity. One kind word or deed can change the world. The simple act of obediently sharing the gospel can bring spiritual life to a person destined for eternal death.
What would you do differently today if you truly understood and believed you were making history?
